Cygnus is a northern constellation on the plane of the Milky Way, deriving its name from the Latinized Greek word for swan.
Cygnus was among the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd century astronomer Ptolemy, and it remains one of the 88 modern constellations. In Greek mythology, Cygnus represented several legendary swans. Notably, Orpheus was transformed into a swan upon his death and placed in the night sky next to his lyre (a neighboring constellation). In Hinduism, the star system that correlates with Brahmamuhurtha (the moment of the universe) is Cygnus; this time of day falls in the early morning hours and is seen as a good time to meditate or start the day.
Alpha Cygni, aka Deneb, is the brightest star in Cygnus and one of the brightest stars in the night sky. It is a white supergiant located at the tail of the swan, and about 2600 light years away. Many star systems in Cygnus have known planets as discovered when the Kepler Mission observed an area around Cygnus.
It is most easily visible during the month of September.
