Another fine “Fine” Japanese nib
I bought the Platinum Preppy 03 Blue-Black to get a feel for the nib and test out the ink. The pen started right away after installing the supplied cartridge, which comes with a we...view morelcomed agitator: if I store the pen with the nib pointing downward, the pen stars right away on all the papers I wrote on—from 20# all-purpose paper to more expensive smooth paper. If I leave the pen on a flat surface, the pen does start right away, but after a few words, the pen skips and the stops. This is where the agitator come in: shake the Preppy a few times if it was kept on a desk, and the pen should not skip or stop when you put it to paper. This is my first Preppy so I don’t know if this is the nature of the pen or if I have a bad one. I would think it’s normal behaviour, hence the agitator. This will not deter me from buying more. The Blue-Black supplied with the pen is a bit bluer than Iroshizuku Shin-Kai; I would actually call it Navy Blue. In heavily soaked areas, the outline has pretty red sheen. It flows well, decently coats the nib. Though I find it too unsaturated, it still retains its brightness once dry. view less

Fine little writer
I have the 03 (fine), and it's shockingly good for the price. It was a little finicky at first (flow issues? traces of factory gunk in the feed?), but now it's silky smooth - just...view more a pleasure to write with. The included ink also grew on me...I tend to like bolder, more saturated blues, but Platinum Blue Black is classy and professional, with some shading and nice water resistance. I did notice that this fine nib is more like a Western fine (that is, bolder) than other Japanese fines I've tried, so bear that in mind when choosing a nib size. view less

All the Preppys (in all colors) are amazing!
Don't be fooled by the price -- Preppys and an amazing workhorse of a pen in any price range. I have left them for two years and they started up with nothing more than a drop of w...view moreater on the tip! Great flow, can be eyedroppered for a lot of ink storage, and if there is anything that is too bad it is that they do not come in a stub nib! Good starter pens, but I have a LOT of pens and still use my Preppys! view less
