The original shape of the bottle, which is typified by the long neck with marble, derives from the thirties. In addition to the long neck, the bottle is characterized by the rounded shape and wide, stable base. The new 'Dutch Masters' bottle holds more than 120 ml (4.0 oz) and thus contains more than twice as much fountain pen ink as the "regular" Akkerman ink bottles.
By tilting the closed bottle the bottle neck itself with ink. When righted, the marble will fall vertically and prevent the ink to flow back. This creates a reservoir above the marble which is easy to fill, even if the jar is almost empty.

Finally found my perfect blue
I'm so happy the Akkerman ink bottle I received is ginormous because I will be using this blue frequently! A lovely soft not-royal-not navy shade - the color of a clear Northern sk...view morey. Not too wet, it has a nice flow in my Twsbi Eco fine nib. Should I make this my signature color? Its competition for 1st place is Monteverde's Citrine, the color of bourbon. So hard to choose.... view less

Akkerman Dutch Masters 01 Ceruleum blauw van Vermeer
I have just received this ink in the mail. During the long trip to Western Canada via the post office, the cap developed a crack around the top rim and there was some spillage. The...view more quality of the plastic is certainly not up to par with the amazing bottle that this ink comes in. That being said, the spillage wasn't a lot, the box is still usable, and the cap has been patched enough to make it usable. As for the ink. This is a blue hue that I have been searching for and although I have found close matches with other inks, this inks amazing shading qualities is by far my favorite. I put it in a pen with a 1.1 mm stub nib and started writing in a Tomoe River notepad and couldn't stop. When I finished the page and looked over the whole thing I was blown away at how the shading looked throughout the page.
Would I buy more of this ink considering the problem with the lid? Absolutely. It could have been a freak accident that exposed an unknown weakness but regardless, not too much ink was lost and the visual results of using this ink is amazing. I will probably wait until spring and then order the Israel's zeeblauw color to add to my collection. I can honestly give my highest recommendation for this ink view less

DM 01 Ceruleum blauwe
This is great ink and well named given Vermeer's lavish use of blue (and penchant for pricey pigments). Actually it's not nearly as pricey as it may seem because this is a big bot...view moretle and a lot of ink.
I found the color to be even richer than in the image. It really is a gorgeous shade. The Akkerman bottle is itself a thing of beauty. I'm grateful to Vanness for being one of the very few stockists in the US.
One observation: because of the ingenious design of the bottle there is ample opportunity for ink to migrate to the upper section in transit. Be aware of this the first time you open the bottle (especially at higher altitudes). It is easy for the ink to jump out at the unprepared. You can avoid disaster by bleeding some ink back into the lower reservoir. view less
